Tree planting advise.

Here are a few simple steps to successfully planting a tree in your garden.

Choose your preferred location for your tree.

 

The best advise these days is to dig your whole wide and shallow, so it should be no deeper than the root ball and ideally 1.2 meters (4ft) wide.

To ensure the correct depth of planting use a straight edge (long cane, piece of wood, garden rake etc.) to make sure you have the top of root ball level with the surrounding ground.

 

Make sure your tree is upright and begin to back fill the soil, firmed in layers by treading it down to help remove any air voids that can slump later. Remember your finished soil level should be level with the root ball of the tree and not above it.

 

 

Add 4 inches of bark chip mulch, to maintain moisture in the soil , to keep it warm in the cold nights and cool in the heat, suppress weeds & prevents lawn mower and strimmer damage. Care should be taken not to mulch right up to the tree trunk, there should be a 10cm (4″) mulch free surface at the base of the tree.

 

If your tree is in a exposed/windy location it is important to provide it with stability with a tree stake, this will prevent the tree from rocking and causing root damage. The tree stake will need to stay in place for the 1st 1 or 2 years.
